A Multi-Solution Approach to Acoustic Challenges

Noise and Vibrations (N&V) form a crucial quality parameter since vibrations in structural models can cause problems related to fatigue, durability or even safety.

N&V solutions from MSC Software offer FEA and MBD simulation capabilities that enable engineering professionals to assess the vibrating components of a product irrespective of the operating conditions. For instance, engineers can predict how the driver of a vehicle is likely to perceive engine sound under acceleration or analyze the noise generated when a vehicle runs over a speed bump or pot hole.

This solution enables several kinds of N&V simulations such as analysis of fully trimmed modals, automated component modal synthesis, transfer path analysis, transient response analysis, FRF based assembly, and many more.

Key Solutions

Structural Vibrations

Engineers need to study the natural vibration characteristics of a structure and the impact of external loading factors, such as frequency response and transient loading.

NVH software solutions from MSC Software can shed insights on linear and non-linear modal analysis, transient and frequency responses for structural components, as well as systems and mechanical assemblies. The study results can be used to perform coupled acoustics predictions for interior or exterior noise of a product.

Engineers can also perform fatigue predictions that involve detailed, vibratory, and transient loading histories, presented in the vibration simulation.

Interior & Exterior Acoustics

Interior Acoustics solutions help assess the fluid pressure inside a bounded structure and adjust and solve for sound pressure levels. Similarly, the sound field generated by a vibrating structure can be subjected to a single coupled vibro-acoustic analysis using Exterior Acoustic solutions.

MSC Software also offers analysis solutions that enable acoustic engineers to recognise the noisy components in an assembly using the panel participation feature.

Frequency Response Function Analysis

There are several challenges to NVH analysis, one of the most crucial one being the assessment of the path of energy flow from one source to a point of interest. MSC software offers a Frequency Response Function (FRF) based on technology to counter this challenge.

FRF is nothing but the frequency response of components that occurs due to unit loads at a given frequency. This software technique helps with transfer path analysis (TPA), through which acoustic engineers can identify the energy flow from source to receiver. Engineers can trace the crucial paths and noise sources.

This solution can be combined with MSC Nastran to make use of specific solvers and improve the overall performance of a vehicle.

Large Model and Assembly Simulation

Some of the NVH characteristics may not be impacted by the complete vehicle design. Simulation of such features can be performed with a comprehensive vehicle system model that includes structural and mechanical system assemblies.

MSC software provides reliable and flexible techniques to accurately model and simulate such behaviours. Some of the techniques are:

  • Automated Component Mode Synthesis (ACMS) for quick analysis of modals.
  • External Superelements that are mainly used in the assembly process to allow partitioning of a full vehicle and reuse of component information.
  • Other methodologies include modeling of jointed connections, welded, and fastened assemblies.
