Solutions to Optimize Designs for Efficiency and Performance Early in Product Development Cycle

To design and develop the best-in-class products, engineers must evaluate and compare various product attributes such as cost, weight, manufacturability, quality, and performance. In this evaluation process, it is challenging for engineers to calibrate the best design and make the right decisions without compromising the quality and safety of the product.

MSC Software offers a comprehensive range of solutions to enable optimization based on several parameters. Whether it is the use of gradient based optimization methods, like sizing, shape and topology optimization, or calculation of response surfaces, to a broader process management to analyze and optimize designs, MSC Software’s solutions across a wide range of disciplines can address all your design optimization needs suitably. These solutions can also be integrated with third-party optimizers to cater to your specific requirements.

Key Features

Gradient-based optimization techniques

Based on MSC Nastran’s gradient-based optimization technique, the solutions can be categorized into sizing, shape, and topology optimization, as per the methods used to accomplish the ideal design. To facilitate superior control on material thickness and geometry, MSC also provides some advanced forms of shape and size optimization called topography and topometry, respectively.

Multi-run and Design Space Exploration

To enable users to develop the best design, MSC provides tools that facilitate users to set up multi-run CAE experiments based on multiple simulation models and even different disciplines. A Response Surface Method (RSM) is used to create an approximate model which illustrates how the design will behave over a larger operating space. Equipped with such models, it becomes very easy for the user to perform “what if” and design trade-off studies.

Design improvement, process integration & management

Optimization and Design Improvement studies generate large amounts of simulation data and results associated with up to thousands of design variables, which need to be tracked and managed. MSC Solutions can easily be integrated with third-party applications, as per customer simulation and process requirements. They help in streamlining the entire simulation process without loss of any relevant data while ensuring that critical design configurations are easily identifiable.

MSC Software is used for various types of design optimizations such as:

  • Automated External Superelement Optimization (AESO)
  • Systematic Bead Design of thin-walled structures using Topography Optimization
  • DOE (Design of Experiment) and CDD (Conservative Discrete Design)
  • Equivalent Static Loads Approach
  • Optional externally calculated responses
  • Fully Stressed Design
  • Include manufacturing constraints when optimizing
  • Optimize multiple models across several analysis disciplines simultaneously
  • Nonlinear Response Optimization
  • Optimal thickness distribution using Topometry/Free-Size Optimization
  • Optimize for the linear and nonlinear domain
  • Optimize model parameters, such as material properties and geometric dimensions
  • Parametric Design and Analysis
  • Reduce high stress concentrations with shape optimization
